Listed prices are only an estimate, compiled from the Drug Tariff and other public pricing references, not a price any one pharmacy has promised. Real-world prices depend on the pharmacy you choose and your location, so confirm the exact price with the pharmacy before you buy. A price that looks far too low compared with the range shown here is a red flag about the seller's license.
This is a prescription-only medicine (POM). A valid UK prescription from a UK-registered prescriber is required before a pharmacy can dispense it.
Fill it at a pharmacy registered with the GPhC (Great Britain) or the PSNI (Northern Ireland).
Avanafil is a prescription-only medicine under MHRA classification rules. A pharmacist is only able to release it against a valid prescription from a UK-registered prescriber.
Without a current prescription, a GP or another UK-registered prescriber can issue a new one before the pharmacy can act on it. Expect the pharmacy to check that the prescriber is UK-registered, as a routine safeguard.
About Avanafil
Avanafil is a second-generation, highly selective PDE5 inhibitor. It is most commonly prescribed for erectile dysfunction in adult males, helping support an erection when there is sexual stimulation. Avanafil requires a prescription in the United Kingdom and is available as a generic medicine since 2024-06-14.
What Avanafil is used for
Avanafil is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in adult males. Erectile dysfunction means difficulty getting or keeping an erection suitable for sexual activity. Avanafil does not create sexual desire and sexual stimulation is needed for a response.
Assessment of erectile dysfunction should consider possible underlying causes and suitable treatment options. The medicine is not indicated for females or paediatric patients. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in patients below the age of 18 years.
How Avanafil works
Avanafil belongs to a group of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors. During sexual stimulation, natural signals in the penis increase a chemical messenger called cyclic guanosine monophosphate. This relaxes smooth muscle and widens blood vessels, allowing more blood to enter the erectile tissue.
PDE5 normally breaks down this messenger. By blocking PDE5, avanafil helps maintain the chemical signal for longer and can support an erection.
Sexual stimulation is still required, so the medicine does not cause an erection on its own. Avanafil also has blood-vessel-widening effects elsewhere in the body, which can lower blood pressure and explains some important interactions.
Dosage from the label
The label lists 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg oral tablets. The usual starting dose is 100 mg as needed, as early as approximately 15 minutes before sexual activity. The label lists a possible increase to 200 mg as early as approximately 15 minutes before sexual activity, or a reduction to 50 mg approximately 30 minutes before sexual activity, based on efficacy and tolerability.
The label lists use no more than once a day. The label lists use with or without food. The label lists 50 mg as the starting dose for patients on stable alpha-blocker therapy.
The label lists a maximum of 50 mg in a 24-hour period for patients using a moderate CYP3A4 inhibitor. The lowest dose that provides benefit should be used, and sexual stimulation is required for a response.
Key warnings
- Do not use if sexual activity is inadvisable because of cardiovascular status
- Do not use with organic nitrates in any form
- Do not use with guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat or vericiguat
- Seek emergency treatment for an erection lasting greater than 4 hours
- Stop and seek medical care after sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
- Stop and seek prompt medical attention after sudden decrease or loss of hearing
- Do not use in severe renal impairment or severe hepatic impairment
- Hypersensitivity reactions, including pruritus and eyelid swelling, have been reported
Main interactions
- Organic nitrates can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure and are contraindicated
- Alpha-blockers can add to blood-pressure lowering and cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
- Other antihypertensives can add to avanafil's blood-pressure-lowering effect
- Substantial alcohol consumption greater than 3 units can increase dizziness and other postural blood-pressure symptoms
- Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, including ketoconazole and ritonavir, increase avanafil exposure and should not be used with it
- Moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors, including erythromycin, diltiazem, fluconazole, and verapamil, increase avanafil exposure
- Grapefruit juice is likely to increase avanafil exposure
- CYP inducers are not recommended with avanafil
Missed dose
Avanafil is used as needed rather than on a fixed daily schedule. A missed dose usually means the planned use was not taken before sexual activity.
Do not double the amount to make up for a missed dose. A pharmacist or prescriber can advise about the next planned use, especially when other medicines or health conditions are involved.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Avanafil is not indicated for use in females. There are no data from pregnant women to inform risks for adverse developmental outcomes, and there is no information about its presence in human or animal milk, effects on a breastfed child, or effects on milk production.
Discuss pregnancy or breastfeeding questions with a doctor or pharmacist. The label also states that no studies have evaluated the effect of avanafil on fertility in men.
Storage
Store at controlled room temperature 25°C, with excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C. Protect the tablets from light. Keep them in the original packaging and away from moisture, children, and anyone for whom they were not prescribed, as directed on the label.
